Lower Canada College Secure First CSSHL Championship

Lower Canada College (Montreal, QC) captured their first Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) Eastern Championship with a flurry of comebacks to earn a 7-4 win over Bishop’s College School (Sherbrooke, QC) in the U17 Prep final Sunday.

In the first, William Lynam would score the lone goal for LCC to establish an early lead. Alessandro Sforza (34/38) would stop all nine Bishop’s shots in the first.

However, Bishop’s would go on an early tear in the second after Grady Cohen’s (1G, 1A) early snipe from the slot. Under two minutes later, the semi-final shootout hero Dominik Bickos would spearhead Bishop’s into the lead while Thomas Roy buried a one-timer off a slick feed from Jan Hanzlik (2A) to make things 3-1. LCC would maintain their composure, scoring shortly after with a deflection off the stick of Harry Miller (2G, 1A). 15-seconds later, a rare ‘hand-on-the-puck’ penalty would send LCC to center ice for a penalty shot. Alex Gervasi (2G) would get the honour and make no mistake, roofing a backhander to tie things up back at 3-3.

Fast forward to the third and after some back-and-forth action, Elliott Correia (1G, 1A) would bang home the go-ahead goal after an impressive rush from Hanzlik. Once again in quick succession, LCC would tie things up. This time it was Mario Lapenna (1G, 3A) saving the day, firing one short side for his 4th of the playoffs.

Still on the ice, Lapenna came in clutch once again finding Gervasi in tight for the go-ahead goal on an excellent deflection. The Lions would keep pouring on the offense with the lead. Gianluca Gatto would slip LCC’s sixth the five hole while Miller bagged the empty netter.

En première période, William Lynam inscrit l’unique but du LCC pour donner les devants tôt dans le match. Alessandro Sforza (34/38) repousse les neuf tirs de Bishop’s lors de cet engagement.

Cependant, Bishop’s connaît un excellent début de deuxième période. Commençant par le tir précis de Grady Cohen (1B, 1A) de l’enclave. Moins de deux minutes plus tard, le héros de la fusillade en demi-finale, Dominik Bickos, propulse Bishop’s en tête, puis Thomas Roy enchaîne avec un tir sur réception sur une superbe passe de Jan Hanzlik (2A) pour porter la marque à 3-1. LCC a su garder son sang-froid et a répliqué peu de temps après grâce à une déviation de Harry Miller (2B, 1A). Quinze secondes plus tard, une rare pénalité pour « main sur la rondelle » envoie LCC au centre de la glace pour un tir de pénalité. Alex Gervasi (2B) s’en charge et ne rate pas sa chance, marquant d’un revers dans la lucarne pour égaliser à 3-3.

En troisième période, après un jeu de va-et-vient, Elliott Correia (1B, 1A) redonne les devants à Bishop’s en concluant une brillante montée de Hanzlik. Encore une fois, LCC réplique rapidement. Cette fois, Mario Lapenna (1B, 3A) joue les héros en marquant du côté rapproché pour son 4e but des séries.

Toujours sur la glace, Lapenna se montre encore décisif en repérant Gervasi dans l’enclave pour le but gagnant grâce à une excellente déviation. Les Lions poursuivent ensuite leur pression offensive. Gianluca Gatto inscrit le 6e but du LCC entre les jambières, avant que Miller complète la marque dans un filet désert.

La Ligue Canadienne Hockey du Sport Scolaire tient à féliciter Lower Canada College et Bishop’s College School pour un match fantastique qui vient conclure la saison Est M17 Prep.
